Bukit Kana National Park
Bukit Kana National Park (BKNP) was gazetted under the National Parks and Nature Reserves Ordinance 1998 on 15 January 2015. This area covers an area of 4,923 hectares covering the Sangan, Tatau area. The centre is 20km from Sangan and 110km from Bintulu. It is accessible by road and river from Tatau and travelling from Bintulu takes 1hr 55 minutes.
Surrounded by 9 longhouses from various Iban, Punan and other communities. BKNP is synonymous and famous as a picnic and eco-tourism area in the Tatau District. This National Park was also previously used by the University Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus (UPMKB) as a location for ‘Forest Camps’ and field training. An expedition was also held in 2018 by UPMKB together with the Sarawak Forest Department.
BKNP has an administrative building which is also used as a hostel accommodation with 12 rooms that can accommodate more than 40 visitors, equipped with common bathroom, washing area, kitchen, toilet, Surau, laundry store and also an administrative office. The electricity source currently in use is a 2.0KW portable inverter generator. The water source used is from upriver Sungai Kana through gravity feed water system.
BKNP has interesting attractions such as its high and wide waterfall. Currently, 2 waterfall trails have been identified; the largest being Wong Dandi and Kana Kanan waterfall. There are also several other existing treks that range from easy to adventure. The National Park area is far from the city and surrounded by hills. Looking at the diversity of wildlife, camera trap results have shown that the park grounds are roamed by Sunbear, Barking Deer, and Pig-tailed Macaque to name a few. BKNP is very suitable and can be known as the Lost World of Bintulu which can offer unique experiences to activities that can be done in this National Park.
