Bukit Lima Nature Reserve
Located in the heart of Sibu, Bukit Lima Nature Reserve (BLNR) is Sarawak's only protected urban peat swamp forest and one of the city's most popular destinations for nature-based recreation. Covering an area of 219 hectares, the reserve serves as an important sanctuary for biodiversity conservation while providing a green recreational space for the local community and visitors alike.
Historically, the area was officially gazetted as Bukit Lima Forest Reserve in 1929 and later partially developed as a public forest park in 2001.
Originally established as Bukit Lima Forest Park, the area was constituted as a Nature Reserve on 15 December 2011 and officially gazetted on 7 February 2012. Managed by Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), Bukit Lima Nature Reserve plays a significant role in conserving Sarawak's peat swamp ecosystem while promoting environmental education, sustainable recreation and public appreciation of nature. Bukit Lima Nature Reserve was further extended from 219 hectares to a total of 301 hectares in November 2025.
Bukit Lima Nature Reserve has achieved another significant milestone after being recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) as the “Largest Protected Urban Peat Swamp Nature Reserve”, further reinforcing its status as one of Malaysia’s most significant urban conservation areas and highlighting Sarawak’s continued commitment towards peatland conservation and biodiversity protection.

Biodiversity

The reserve is home to 39 species of birds. The most commonly recorded bird species include barbets, babblers, flowerpeckers, broadbills, sunbirds and bulbuls, making the park a popular destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.
Bukit Lima Nature Reserve also supports eight species of mammals, including the Malayan Weasel, Sambar Deer, Giant Squirrel, Plantain Squirrel, Treeshrews, Sunda Pangolin, Slow Loris and Long-tailed Macaque. These species highlight the ecological significance of the reserve as an important urban habitat for Sarawak's wildlife.
