Bukit Hitam Nature Reserve

The area was constituted based on strategic importance as it serves as a vital water catchment for the Limbang population, thereby contributing directly to the sustainability and security of local water resources. Its protection is therefore essential not only from an environmental perspective but also for safeguarding public interest and long-term water supply stability.

Notably, the area represented one of the few remaining relatively undisturbed coastal primary forest ecosystems in the State. As no prior scientific research had been conducted, its biodiversity remained largely undocumented, offering significant potential for future study. Its designation also complemented the proposed Bukit Sembiling Nature Reserve, strengthening ecological connectivity and enhancing the integrity of the surrounding protected landscape.

The area possessed distinctive landforms and high aesthetic value, contributing to its environmental and heritage significance. Preserving these features was essential to maintaining landscape stability, preventing degradation, and retaining its natural scenic qualities.

From a socio-economic perspective, the area offered strong potential for low-impact domestic tourism. The establishment of controlled recreational facilities—such as picnic areas, campsites, and jungle trails—provided much-needed nature-based amenities for Limbang and supported sustainable use while promoting public appreciation for conservation.
