Bukit Sembiling Nature Reserve
Bukit Sembiling Nature Reserve encompasses the entire area of Bukit Sembiling Forest Reserve, which was constituted vide Gazette Notification No. CXCIII dated 25 September 1925. Due to its rugged terrain and the absence of large commercial timber species, the area was not considered economically valuable. Among the dipterocarps, Shorea spp., Dipterocarpus spp., and Dryobalanops spp. were found to be the most abundant. Eurycoma longifolia, commonly known as Tongkat Ali and classified as a protected plant, was also recorded in significant abundance prior to the area’s constitution as a Nature Reserve. As limited research had been conducted before its designation, the area presents considerable potential as a hub for scientific study and biodiversity research.
According to local historical accounts, Bukit Sembiling served as a strategic lookout point during the Rajah era, or possibly earlier. As the highest point in the vicinity, it provided a clear vantage over vessels approaching from Brunei Bay, allowing sufficient time for defensive preparations if required. From a land protection perspective, the steep slopes of Bukit Sembiling are highly susceptible to erosion and landslides if vegetation cover is removed, underscoring the importance of its conservation.
In terms of tourism, Limbang is uniquely positioned, with primary forest located in close proximity to the town centre. Bukit Sembiling, situated near Taman Tasik Bukit Mas, is one of the more popular recreational sites due to its accessibility. It is increasingly regarded as a key “green lung” and an important natural landmark for the town.
