Piasau Nature Reserve
Piasau Nature Reserve (PNR) was once part of Piasau Camp, a site formerly owned by Sarawak Shell Berhad (SSB). With strong public backing, the area was gazetted as a nature reserve on 31 December 2013. Following the gazettement, SSB undertook the demolition of the site’s old buildings, which was implemented in three phases beginning in December 2014.
Located approximately 5 km north of Miri City Centre in the Piasau suburb, the reserve sits on the coastal side of the Miri River, offering a convenient nature stop close to the city. Upon completion of the demolition works, PNR was formally handed over to Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) on 17 May 2016 through a simple handover ceremony.
PNR is also recognised as an important habitat, supporting estimating around 78 Oriental Pied Hornbill individuals.
